In addition to weekly classes, I will continue to introduce my students to the biggest and brightest talents in professional dance during Kick's annual workshops. My long-term goal is to own a theater for performances, trainings, shows and anything else our instructors and students can dream up.

New this fall, I am offering performing arts classes and see Kick eventually offering a full performing arts experience for our students. How would you like the business to grow and change? I still even make a balloon animal or two on occasion. I learned what works, doesn't work, and today we host fantastic birthday parties at Kick. The job taught me to make balloon animals (always a hit) and, most importantly, it was a great foundation for party planning. In high school, I spent a few summers working as a party clown at the Ground Round Grill in Eatontown. I love talking about what I do with people who want to listen.ĭescribe your most unusual customer, job or work experience. Both budget- and timewise, it's important that Kick is out and about in the media and on sites like Facebook and Instagram. With the rise of social media and increased communication with my families, it makes marketing and advertising continued priorities for Kick. I always thought that being established I would not need to market as much.

What surprised you the most about running the business? It's a balancing act and it's exciting to get it right for our teachers and families. I love planning my dance program curriculum! It just flows for me – planning dance schedules and classes creating the themes and types of classes we offer figuring out who should teach our programs and determining which age groups would well together. I share this struggle with the moms in my studio, both those that work and those that don't. My job is 24-7 and it's important to take off for yourself and your family. The hardest job is balancing work and being the best mom and wife I could be. I could not be prouder of my students' accomplishments, in and out of the studio. It's about instilling confidence and strength in children. Beautiful dancing is more than just gorgeous feet. It is also something I teach in my studio. It has always carried me through life and business. When I doubt myself, I always dig deep and find my confidence. What personality trait helps you the most?Ĭonfidence. There are always going to be challenges and threats to my business but when I go with my gut I allow myself to dream bigger and I allow my challenges to make me stronger and better. I received this great advice from a college professor and it still holds true for me today. What's the best business advice you have ever received?

We outgrew space quickly, but I was growing my own family at the time and I also did not find the right opportunities when I was looking. I would have probably started expanding my studio earlier on. If you could do it again, what would you do differently? I see overcoming challenges as a strength and they have only made me try harder and my business stronger. Were there any challenges that made you think twice about striking out on your own? It was a natural step for me and very exciting. My entrepreneurial spirit drove me to purchase my first dance studio. I started the business because of my love for dance and teaching. At age 9, I started my first businesses making candy lollipops for Realtors as client giveaways. I had the passion for owning my own business very early on.

When did you decide you wanted to be an entrepreneur? Vanessa Berry owns Kick Dance Studios, which has locations in Fair Haven and Rumson.
